Expert Witness Services in Missouri and Illinois

Independent Medical Examinations and Expert Testimony

Dr. Brett Taylor is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon who provides independent expert witness and legal consultation services to attorneys, law firms, and physicians in Missouri and Illinois.

Case opinions reflect the medical record and the applicable evidence, not the interests of the party requesting the review. Cases typically involve a spine-related injury, diagnosis, or surgical outcome that requires an outside medical opinion.

Expert Witness & Legal Services

Services Offered

  • Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs). An independent medical examination, or IME, is an evaluation performed by a physician who is not treating the patient. It provides an objective opinion on a claimant's diagnosis, treatment history, or prognosis for use in a legal or insurance matter.
  • Medical Record Review. Dr. Taylor reviews existing medical records, imaging, and treatment history to offer an opinion on causation, necessity of care, or the extent of an injury, without requiring an in-person examination.
  • Deposition Testimony. Sworn testimony given outside of court, used to gather evidence ahead of a trial.
  • Trial Testimony. In-court testimony as a retained orthopedic spine expert.

How a Case Referral Works

Attorneys and physicians typically begin by describing the case in general terms: the nature of the injury, the type of claim, and what kind of opinion is being requested. At this stage, no identifying information about the patient or claimant is needed.

Dr. Taylor reviews the case summary and decides, on a case-by-case basis, whether to accept the referral. If he agrees to proceed, a fee agreement and intake form are sent, and only then is more detailed information, including records and claimant details, requested.

From there, the process generally follows this sequence:

  1. Medical record review and an initial opinion, often communicated by phone.
  2. If the case proceeds further, a written report.
  3. If needed, a deposition.
  4. If the case goes to trial, in-court testimony.
